The Legan Diet

  • Find Local Food

What food is grown or made in the land around you? Research at your local farm shop and online. Discover your local agricultural landscape. Plot safe routes on foot or bicycle from your home to local food sources.

  • The Journey

Make the journey on foot or bicycle to a local food source. Consider this as a food pilgrimage. On arrival, attempt to form a deeper connection. Use touch, stillness, offer a gift of song or water. Try to let the place know you are grateful. Then return home.

  • Self-Certify

The food grown or made at the place you journeyed to is now self-certified as #legan, no matter where you buy it afterward.

Try to increase the number of different legan foods in your diet, and share them with your friends and family.

What is a League?

A league is the ancient world’s measurement of distance. It is defined as how far you can walk in one hour. And #legan rhymes with vegan..

For your food to be self-certified as #legan, you need to journey to its source and back. Ideally, this would be within one hour’s walk. But not every food pilgrimage can be in the premier league. You can also choose to walk more leagues, or you could use a bicycle.

Grown or made?

A #legan journey is to food produced in the landscape around you. You may not especially like the foods grown around you, but in terms of food security, it’s probably a good idea to know what’s about. Who we are is where we are.

A #Legan journey can be to where a food is grown or made. This may be a field or a factory, the choice is yours. You may find that you cannot buy the food directly at its source, but that’s fine. Offer your thanks and return home. Wherever you now buy that particular food, it will be remain certified #Legan.

Foraging and Growing Food?

Your garden or nearest hedgerow is the most ultra-legan food source possible. Plenty of great campaigners work to promote gardening - like Huw Richards - and many people offer advice about foraging - like Robin Harford. But for those of us who buy most of our food, a #legan diet enshrines localism as the highest value in our food-buying choices.

The #Legan Meal

At first, #legan food will only supplement your ordinary diet. What about making a full #legan meal? Can you collect all the ingredients you need, from making food-pilgrimages in the local agricultural landscape? What about oil or fat? What about seasoning? And what are you going to drink? Why not aim for a special meal, a birthday or seasonal celebration? Can you go full #legan?
